"During the month of December, the citizens and tourists in Washington will be delighted to see it snow ...in December," she said. "Thanks to technology developed by the Disney Corporation for their Celebration, Florida town square, we're going to be able to have fresh snowfall on The Square every hour on the hour during Candlelight Shopping and on friday nights in December."

The "snow" will be accompanied by Christmas music, she said. "It will really set the mood for Christmas shopping downtown, and it will bring shoppers from all over the state to boost our merchants' Christmas season."

The material used is known as "dry snow" and is the result of a chemical process very similar to a fog machine, she said. "The result is beautiful flurries flying through the night air, staying aloft like real snow and falling slowly to the ground, where it will evaporate after five to seven minutes. There's no clean-up, it's non-toxic, and not slippery at all."

The machines that will produce snow on The Square will be hidden in decorative housings mounted on each of 10 light poles that surround the inner perimeter of the Square's green space. The Tourism Office will control the machines and the Christmas music that will play at low volume from each pole, she said. "The volume will be appropriate and not interfere with business, only enhance it."

The result should be an attraction that is unique among small towns in Georgia and bring in shoppers from around the state, she said. "Our ability to be innovative in offering something unique will continue to set us apart as a shopping and tourist destination, and it will help our businesses survive and thrive in these tough times."

The funds to pay for the machines will be raised from donations by local businesses, she said. "Everybody I've talked to is excited about something that makes shopping in Washington unique, and we're dedicated to bringing business to our merchants."
