Escape to a simpler time at Callaway Plantation, a living history museum with tours of plantation homes and outbuildings. Five homes grace the grounds of the once-3,000 acre plantation, from a 1785 log cabin to the 1869 Brick House, each filled with period furnishings. The plantation, a restoration of the city of Washington, is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 5. A small fee is charged for admission, and picnicking and RV sites are available. The plantation is located 5 miles west of Washington on Highway 78, across from the Washington-Wilkes Airport (IIY).
