• WASHINGTON WILKES 250th Historic Celebrations Committee

    Purpose:

    The purpose of the 250 Committee is to celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, from which our liberties flow. This includes freedoms such as speech, religion, assembly, the right to keep and bear arms, and many others which we cherish.

    Mission:

    Our mission is to raise awareness and educate citizens about the blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifices our forefathers made for the freedoms we enjoy today.

    250th Anniversary of:

    2026 The Declaration of Independence

    2027 The Creation of Wilkes County

    2028 The Establishment of the Georgia Militia, Colonel John Dooly, leader

    2029 The Battle of Kettle Creek

    2030 The Establishment of the City of Washington

  • The Washington-Wilkes 250th Committee will host: 

    The Battle of Kettle Creek Author’s Forum

    Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. 

    Pope Center in Washington, Georgia

    This special event will feature noted historians and authors Dan Elliott, Robert Scott Davis, Dr. David Noble, Dan Bigman, and Carolyn Faz, each offering their unique perspectives and research on the pivotal Revolutionary War battle fought at Kettle Creek.

    Attendees will gain insight into new interpretations, archaeological discoveries, and historical debates surrounding one of Georgia’s most significant Revolutionary War victories. A Q&A session will follow the presentations, giving the audience an opportunity to engage directly with the authors and deepen their understanding of this important chapter in American history.
