Hiking and Nature Trails - Walk in history
Kettle Creek Battlefield
This National Parks Service site on the Register of Historic Places, commemorates this famous Revolutionary War battle, a turning point in the American Revolutionary War in Georgia. With monuments and historic markers outlining the events of this historic battle, the 220-acre tract features well maintained hiking and nature trails and a picnic area atop War Hill, the focus of the battle.
Trail details: The 2.2-mile loop trail is generally considered an easy route for hiking and walking.
Elijah Clark State Park
Located in nearby Lincolnton, this park includes an easy 2-mile trail. Named for Elijah Clark, a Revolutionary War hero who led the Georgia patriots at the Battle of Kettle Creek, the park includes a log cabin replica of Clark’s home. The park is located on the western shore of Clarks Hill Lake, a favorite spot for fishing, swimming and camping. Cottages are also available.
Water Trails and Fun on the Lake
Clarks Hill Lake
This 71,100-acre lake on the Savannah River is one of the largest lakes in the Southeast and one of the most favorite for fishing, camping and water sports. A favorite access to the lake is at Holliday Park, a short drive from Washington, where you’ll find a boat ramp, camping and picnic areas.
Little River Water Trail
This scenic 20-mile water trail winds from Woodruff Bridge on Highway 80 to Clarks Hill Lake, passing through the Clarks Hill Wildlife Management Area. This slow-moving waterway is perfect for novice paddlers and nature lovers, with easy access from GA Highway 78 near Washington and a short drive from I-20 at exit 172.
Camping - A Peaceful Getaway
Skull Shoals Park and Campground
Nestled on 68 acres of large Georgia pines and away from the hustle and bustle, Skull Shoals Park and Campground offers 18 full hookup RV sites and a large selection of tent sites and an amphitheater. This is a popular choice for weddings, private parties and outdoor music.
Holliday Park
Holliday Park, located on Clarks Hill Lake on the west bank of the Savannah River, the park covers 333 acres. Amenities include fishing, boat ramps, picnic areas and 31 campsites, some with power for RVs and some primitive camping.
Washington-Wilkes Country Club and RV Park
This private golf club features a 9-hole golf course designed by Donald Ross, a Scottish-born architect who designed courses at Pinehurst as well as several hundred other courses. RV park guests are welcome to play the course and have use of the driving range and putting green. The RV Park has a swimming pool, lake, fishing and eight sites for RV camping.
Southern Fishing and Hunting at its best
Fishing Creek Public Hunting Area
This Wildlife Management Area, located near Tignall in Wilkes County, is open seasonally for hunting deer, turkey, small game, and waterfowl. The 2,900-acre Wildlife Management Area includes a fishing lake and is open year-round for fishing, camping, pre-season scouting, hiking, picnicking, canoeing.
Pope Plantation Hunting Lodge
Experience authentic southern hunting centered around beautiful fields, timber, and creek bottoms. Expert guides and well-trained dogs help you discover the best hunting opportunities. The property is managed year-round to provide natural food resources for deer, quail and other game.
The rustic lodge was built in the early 1800s with original heart of pine floors and grand front porch. Meals can be provided, or you can explore the tempting restaurants in historic downtown Washington.
Mistletoe State Park
Located in nearby Lincolnton, Mistletoe State Park is known as one of the best bass fishing spots in the nation. Boat ramps and a sandy beach for swimming make this park a summer favorite for water sports. Cottages, log cabins, and campgrounds are available, and overnight guests may rent canoes for paddling around the lake.
