Chantilly Plantation, just a short distance from Washington’s historic square, was built between 1820 and 1850 in the classic Greek Revival style, complete with huge columns gracing a welcoming front porch. Things to do while you’re in Washington Wilkes:- Mary Willis Library - National Register of Historic Places. Original Tiffany and other stained-glass windows still adorn the first public library in Georgia where some of the original furnishings are still in use. Built in 1889 it has an invaluable core collection of rare books on Wilkes County and Georgia history.
- The Robert Toombs House State Historic Site on Toombs Avenue house offers a peek into the life of Georgia U.S. Congressman and Senator Robert Toombs, who later served as a leader of the Confederacy and one of the creators of the Georgia Constitution of 1877. The home was built in 1794 and is open for tours. The interior of the house has been replicated to the time Robert Toombs lived there and includes his private library.
- The Washington Wilkes Historical Museum occupies an historic home originally built in 1835 and restored into a museum in the 1950s. The museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts including a topographical map of nearby Kettle Creek Battlefield. The house showcases authentically furnished rooms with antiques dating to the mid 1800’s, including an original Eli Whitney cotton gin, Jefferson Davis’s field desk, Dave the Slave pottery, and pieces owned by George Washington.
