As you plan your itinerary for celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the resulting Revolutionary War, beautiful Washington GA in Wilkes County is the perfect destination for visiting the nearby Kettle Creek Battlefield, site of the only Revolutionary War battle won in Georgia.
Washington was named by Southern Living Magazine as one of the “prettiest small towns in Georgia”, and it also holds the distinction of having the most antebellum homes than any other small town or city of its size in the state, many of which have been meticulously maintained or renovated.
The annual Spring Tour of Homes and Arts Show, April 4, 2026, is a favorite among historic home tours in Georgia, and is your opportunity to look inside a few of these old Georgia homes, perhaps tour their gardens, and learn the backstories about their owners and their roles in Georgia and in Washington and Wilkes County history.

If you have not visited Washington, you’re in for a real treat. Not only do these elegant reminders of Washington’s prosperous origins line the streets welcoming you into town, but these Georgia historic houses decorate tree-shaded streets that are quite pleasant for walking and relishing the vibrance of Spring.
Washington’s lively Town Square is the perfect place to begin your Spring celebration. As part of the Tour of Homes, be sure to take in the Arts Show in the Court Street Livery a beautiful 19th century barn and special events facility just off the town square.

This year’s Art Show features an impressive mix of talented artists with works ranging from oils and watercolors to pottery, mixed medium and jewelry designers. As you walk around town, take notice of colorful murals depicting history and memories of early Washington, including a contemporary mural by local muralist Emida Roller depicting community vibrance and unity.

Washington and surrounding Wilkes County is long steeped in history and heritage with many “firsts” – you’ll see the list on an historic plaque in the Historic Town Square. Among them…

- Wilkes County was Georgia’s first county, formed under the State Constitution, February 5, 1777.
- The Mary Willis Library in Washington, originally opened in 1889, was the first free public library in the state and is still in operation. This beautiful historic building features its original Tiffany Glass windows.
