Whether you’re planning a day outing for a small group of friends or looking for the ideal backdrop for your family reunion or wedding, Washington, in Wilkes County GA, has authentic small-town appeal anchored by genuinely friendly people and by plenty of things to do for a variety of interest groups. From history buffs and antebellum architecture enthusiasts to comfort food, wine lovers, antiques and shopping fanatics…there’s something for everyone.

Historic Mary Willis Library is the ideal place to delve into history of Washington-Wilkes or for researching the Wilkes County Georgia genealogy of family members who were born in this piedmont area that was one of the first counties established in Georgia.
Just a few blocks off Washington’s Town Square, this beautiful library, with its original Tiffany Glass window and many original furnishings, was built in fashionable high Victorian style in1888 by Dr. Francis T. Willis in memory of his daughter Mary. It was the first free public library in Georgia.
Along with its up-to-date collection of books and library materials, the library is also the home to an invaluable collection of rare books and resources on Washington and Wilkes County Georgia history, including works by local authors as well as memorabilia and newspapers. Mary Willis Library is included in the National Register of Historic Places.

Nearby, Washington Historical Museum, located in a traditional two over two saltbox style house originally built in 1835, houses artifacts, memorabilia and documents from over 200 years of Washington and Wilkes County history, including items dating to the American Revolutionary War and American Civil War.
Jackson AME Chapel, built in 1867, was the first church erected in Wilkes County by newly freed former slaves, and an important reminder of Wilkes County Georgia Black history.
Historic Jackson Chapel is tied to the Gaines family, and some family members still attend services there. Following the Civil War, Rev. William Gaines and Bishop Wesley John Gaines established AME churches across Georgia. Bishop Wesley John Gaines also co-founded Morris Brown College. The church has been recognized by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
Cherry Grove Schoolhouse, built in 1910, was constructed on the grounds of the 1875 Cherry Grove Baptist Church to provide a center of education for African American children. This historic one-room, wood frame building has been recognized by The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation as a rare example of a rural African American school building in Georgia.RoberSecretary of State of the

Skull Shoals Park and Campground is a 68-acre event facility, perfect for a family gathering or other special events. The Court Street Livery, just off Washington’s historic town square, is a beautiful 19th century barn combining rustic charm with modern chic and an open floor plan perfect for parties, banquets, weddings and events for up to 175 guests with additional space available for outdoor tents for larger groups in the adjoining plaza.
The Tulip, a boutique event venue centrally located on Washington Square, is perfect for special events, social gatherings, reunions and celebrations! The facility is well equipped with a catering kitchen, table and chairs. Great location with lots of restaurants and shops nearby…even a wine room!
