Mule Day is a celebration of rural farm life in Georgia from the late 1700’s to 1900. The mule was the "tractor" for these early farms. Imagine being without your car....that is how important the mule was for early farmers. There will be Mule Plowing Contests and a Mule Show with cash prizes. As you walk the grounds throughout the day, demonstrators will show how farms produced their own turpentine, wood shingles, pine straw baskets, soap, and so much more. A blacksmith will even be showing how horse shoes and nails were made.

Children can enjoy many hands-on activities such as mule plowing, rope making and weaving on a loom. They can interact with animals through pony rides and a petting zoo. A talented group of musicians will be playing the hammered dulcimer in the Manor House and other instruments. Vendors from around the Southeast will be selling their delicious foods and beautiful arts & crafts.

    Description

So just what is Mule Day all about? The Mule was the "tractor" for the farms of early America. Imagine being without your car....that's how important the Mule was for early farmers.

So what will I see at Mule Day? Mule Day is a look back at life on a rural farm. There will be Mule Plowing Demonstrations. Draft and Cotton Mules. A Petting Zoo. DEMONSTRATIONS VARY YEAR TO YEAR. Demonstrations of lost arts such as Cornhusk Weaving, Blacksmithing, Rope Making, Soap Making and much more.  Hosts in the 3 house museums will be in period costumes appropriate for the 1785 log cabin, 1790 Grey House, and the 1869 Greek Revival.  The will also be period music such as mandolin, vocal, fiddle etc in the morning and afternoon at the various homes.

NEW THIS YEAR:  Be sure to visit Blue Haven Bee Company at the back of the Brick Mansion.  They will be demonstrating how to harvest honey from bee hives.  They will also show how wine (mead) is made from honey.  Samples will be available of all kinds of honey ...while supplies last.

Ever wonder what a country fair would have been like 150 years ago? It would have lots to do for the kids, like a petting zoo, panning for gold, and sack races. The sheepdog demonstration would have been a big hit, especially when they herd the ducks over a little bridge. There would have been real food like fresh-squeezed lemonade, rib-eye sandwiches, and church groups with marvelous baked goods. So many vendors with hand-made items would entice you to buy their wares. The music would be a serenade as you strolled the grounds, seeing the sights and eating hand-churned ice cream...
This is what awaits visitors at Mule Days/Southern Heritage Festival at Callaway Plantation in Washington, Ga.

The historic houses on site throw open their doors and welcome all to experience a one-of-a-kind step back in time. The Mule Show in the arena nearby gives ribbons for various classes of mules - a veritable Mule Beauty Contest. There's even a chance to try your hand at plowing with a mule.

Many kinds of antique tractors are well represented, along with antique cars. A huge turpentine still made entirely of copper comes to visit that day also.

There is also a special show with highly trained mules.  Joining the fun are a blacksmith, quilters, spinners, weavers, chair caner, pine needle basket maker, carpenter, a shingle roofing demo, a Jail Wagon, Chuck Wagon and a Tinker's wagon. Don't miss Old Doc Bell's Tonic and Elixers that include authentic root beer, birch beer, cream soda and more (snake oil not included!).

The Hit String Band, a truly talented family playing bluegrass favorites, will be playing in one spot. The ring of the Classis City Dulcimers will echo in another area, and the duo Clay Babies will be strumming along as well.

It's a blast from the past - 150 years ago!  Make us a part of your family's tradition. Held annually on the 2nd Saturday in October.
